Kalyanji Bhagat
Kalyanji Bhagat was born a farmer
in a small village of Kutch, Gujarat. In 1941 as a migrant he arrived in
Bombay. Initially we were a spice seller in Bombay and use to manage a grocery
store. He accepted the bets which were based on the opening and closing rates
of cotton which was traded to the wholesale market in New York and pioneered
the matka gambling. He was the satta king.
He built a matka empire worth hundreds of crores. He used to operate from his own building.
Suresh Bhagat
Suresh Bhagat was the son of
Kalyanji Bhagat who managed the business of his father after him along with his
wife namely Jaya Bhagat. Suresh Bhagat was killed on June 11, 2008 along with
his lawyer and bodyguards in a car accident where a truck deliberately rammed
into their car. They were returning from the court in Alibaug after the hearing
of the narcotics case of the year 1998. Later after further investigation that
it was a murder case and the plot was hatched by Jaya Bhagat and Suresh
Bhagat’s son, Hitesh Bhagat to him for his property. Along with nine other
people they were arrested under the act of Maharashtra Control of Organised
Crime Act and then convicted for the same.
Rattan Khatri
From early 1960’s to mid of 1990
Rattan Khatri was known as the satta
matka king. He used to operate through an illegal gambling network
operating nationwide that involved international connections and had several
lakh punters and involved. He used to deal with crores of rupees. In Mumbadevi
the bustling business of Khatri’s matka was started in the Dhanji Street. From
the New York market’s, the idlers there used to wager on the daily trickle of
the cotton rates which are fluctuating all the time. The quantum of bets and
betters gradually increased day by day and the gambling game becomes bigger. On
the request of friends Rattan Khatri started his own syndicate and used to
decide the number of the day by drawing three cards. As the cards were opened
in presence of the patron Khatri’s betting was considered to be genuine. Rattan
Khatri was jailed for 19 months during the emergency in India. At present the satta king has retired from gambling
and lives near Tardeo.
